Background is good, it just needs to be pretty simple so the text can be read (or text could have a black background).

Ok, then how about just a plain flat for background? and making the descriptions have a faded black square like that of the menus (maybe even more transparent if needed)? Cool! I'll download them and put them inside the PK3 files.

Or you could do what Heretic and Hexen did for the end of episodes/hubs and use one of the normal in-game textures as background, some of them are pretty good for text to be readable.
