I mean when bought in retail stores instead of directly from id software. I also mean back in around 1994-1995. I found that buying these game in retail store: Shareware Doom is legal Registered Doom is illegal Ultimate Doom is legal Doom II is legal. So does Heretic and Hexen follow the same logic? Shareware Heretic is legal Registered Heretic is illegal Heretic Shadow of the Serpent Riders is legal Hexen is legal. Also what is the exact release date for heretic. In terms of month/day/year. Is it released after or before Doom II. Can you say Heretic is to Doom while Hexen is to Doom II?

Heretic was released a few days before Christmas 1994, while Doom II had an October 1994 release (It went "gold" around august or september)

Why would registered Doom be illegal? AFAIK the ultimate Doom was a special version of Doom and was sold as the original game too. EDIT: Only Doom II had a pirated version of the game that couldn't be patched to the latest version.

Well it said the original three episode doom, not ultimate doom, is illegal when bought in stores in all countries except a few of them. It says it in Hank Leukart's FAQ that comes with the doom demo.
